Project introduction:
For decades, the automobile industry has been studying how to reduce the annoying air resistance on the rapidly rotating wheels. This accounts for a considerable proportion of the total air resistance. The design of new electric vehicles shows that the closed rim design with smaller opening is more and more popular for the sake of efficiency and cruising range. Air resistance can be reduced to single digit percentage. Only by completely sealing the rim can the damage of airflow and wheel rotor be completely prevented. However, this conflicts with the necessary cooling of the brake chamber in an emergency (for example, after downhill).
This actuator module developed by a German start-up enterprise can integrate several ventilation valves into the wheel rim. These valves automatically open due to the waste heat of the braking system and start to cool through the wheel surface. Because they don't need power supply, they can also be easily applied to rotating parts: flat bending actuators provide sufficient travel and the necessary robustness of components that rotate rapidly in road traffic.
